A day at the rodeo

Dante participated in his first Bike Rodeo as part of Bonedale Bike Week. Naturally, he wore his Stars and Stripes skinsiut, as would any serious athlete. He kept saying "bicycle race", then would ride as fast as he could, chasing the other kids, all of whom were considerably older.

He made multiple laps through the chalk-line course, and was well behaved in line waiting his turn.

He also participated in the paperboy race, although he needs a bit of work on this throwing arm.

In this photo, his paper caddy assisted in the race. Dante was in bike heaven all day- he had to be pried off the bike to go home.

This past weekend, he rode about a mile on the Prince Creek trails- up Porcupine Road to the Porcupine trail, then a bit of singletrack and then back to the car. The whole way he chased Dad and Newman and kept shouting "bicycle race!"

The weather turned nice in late February and early March, so Dante went out to do laps around the driveway.
Naturally, Billy (the small cat) went along.

All in all it was a good day for ridin'.

Here's a ski pic from Dec 27 at Ajax. We put on little plastic skis and stood around the top of the hill watching the gondy go by.

First, let me just say, that's a lot of cat.

Marge had another hit with her wooden tractors- it was the first gift he opened, and when he was offered more wrapped presents, he said "No more. Done."

Eventually, he came around.

We just had to go to Fruita for some cruising at 18 Road. Nic, Rebecca, Richard, Dave, and Jess all went along to supervise DZ. The ridign was spectacular, a bit dusty, but a perfect day for singletrack on cyclocross bikes. And, that's a SNAZZY suit.

Dante rode his Strider around the parking lot a bit but mostly was concerned with making sure we had enough chips.

So last week at the 12 Hours of Snowmass, Dante threw the biggest meltdown of his career. Turns out it was because he saw a bike he wanted to ride, and when told 'No', he turned pro with kicking and screaming.

Let's face it: We've all been there.

Today, this nifty Strider arrived, and though he was very busy pushing his plastic bus around, it was quickly forgotten. The photos tell the rest of the story:

It was a good day for Dante hanging out at the inagural 12 Hours of Snowmass race. He got to check out some cool bikes while Dad and Scot snuck in a ride.

Dante also offered tech support, he was ready to re-pressurize your shocks.

Newman put in 8 laps in the Solo Clydesdale category. Nice work if you can get it.Nic and Dave rode a great 2-man team race, but never really managed to outrun the baloons.

This guy kept riding by our camp, over and over again, like some sort of stalker.

Lap after lap, he had his Race Face going. His team won, beating some mountain bike legends, and he did not have the fastest lap of the day.

Here's Dante's new Smart ForTwo. He gets it in 16 years or so, in the meantime, Dad will be driving it for him. Note how it is the same size as the 4 wheeler he will be using to plow the driveway.

Dante becomes a Weasel

Dante had a big adventure last week, going to Whistler for the Men's and Women's World Cup races. Although he's only 11 months old, this was his 2nd race series,a nd he stayed very busy.

Dante has now become a Weasel Worker, and has learned how to go to the bar after skiing. Clearly, he likes it.

He also made it into the leader's box in the finish corral.

Between runs, he walked around the coaches' corridor inspecting equipment. He was also on the Euro TV feed.

And made friends with a Swedish racer. She was very sweet and gave him a bib.

Then he went to the village to get his medal.

A gracious winner.
And sat in the sled with mom and dad. Then it was time to go home.

It's been a while

OK, first things first. Mainly, you need one of these things to charge the battery in the camera. Turns out these are like hen's teeth: hard to find and expensive. And, there's been a bit of work to be done in the kitchen. the side panels are going up onto the cabinets, the doors are made and waitign for panel materal. We also have a range hood now.

So, I was thinking, you know, the other day, as I watched dad put up this net stuff on the stairs, this stuff he bought from some ski supply place. He was all proud of himself for solving the six-staircases-and-four-balusters issue, and I thought 'shit, I can fix that', so I climbed the stairs.
In fact, this stuff is easy to climb. I feel like a sailor on this stuff. Bill the Cat kept me company. Aaaaaak. Ptffft.

Still tired from the move, Dante has spent the afternoon snoring and drooling in mom's armpit. If that's not love, I'm not sure how you should define it.

On Sunday, Myrna had some contractions, so we trundled off to Aspen in the trusty Subaru. Our reception was less than stellar, as It was clear that the night nurses didn't want to help out too much. Naturally, we had called the night service at the Doctor's office, but after it rang for 3 minutes, I decided it was not going to pick up. I was really wishing we were at the airport, because by comparison, you really feel like a valued customer there. The staff sort of blew us off, finding us home with some Ambien and instructions to go to see the doc At 8:45. In Basalt.

Which is nice, since Basalt is close to home. Except the Basalt office is closed on Mondays.

We got to the Doc in Aspen, she said Cool-go to the hospital. Like obedient people, we did, and this time check in was or breeze. By 10 or so, we were at set and waiting for drugs. At least I was, Myra had an epidural. But I digress.

Another check, And the Doc says "Hmm.... that feels like a butt." the other Doc checks and goes "Yup. That's a butt. You're having a C-section."

Good to learn my son will carry on my approach of going at life ass-first. But I digress.

So, a quick change of plans, a call to OR, jammies for me, and it's off down the hall.

And, lo and behold, Dante Z came into the world, ass-first. Attaboy.

7 pounds, 8.6 ounces. 21" long. 1:50pm.

Now Mom and baby are resting, gathering energy for a bit of spring skiing. After all, it's corning up nicely out there, and Highlands will be open an extra week. So go there and stay off Ajax.

Let's also give credit where credit is due: Prisca kept us safe and sane, and has been invaluable. If you can bring your own nurse to these events, I say go for it.

On track for the end of the month

The doc says that we can expect the kid to be on time at the end of the month (about 2 weeks), and that the little booger is about 6.5lbs right now. Zyggie could gain up to a pound before he is born.

Since we don't have any pictures of the kid, have a picture from Wengen, Switzerland. Below the Swiss Air Force (just back from invading Liechtenstein) is the famous Hundshopf jump, which is abot 5 meters wide at the top and is about a 41 degree slope. To the skier's left, along the rock, is a 1.5-meter wide 'sneak', where the crew goes around the course. As you slide through the sneak, your tips drag against the rock wall. It is generally considered poor etiquette to snag your tips and fall into the course.
